In April 2025, Nu took part in Talent Land México, the country’s largest technology and innovation event, gathering over 30,000 attendees and hundreds of talks on artificial intelligence, software development, data, and digital inclusion. Representing Nu’s engineering team, Oscar Vargas, our Senior Engineering Manager, presented the talk “Nu’s Evolution in Mexico: 3X More Customers in 2 Years. The Technical Keys Behind Our Growth”.

On stage, Oscar shared how we’ve built a scalable, reliable, and data-driven technical operation. He highlighted the foundations of our microservices-based architecture, the strategies behind maintaining simplicity and team autonomy, and the challenges we’ve overcome in one of Latin America’s most complex markets.

In this post, we’ll explain why participating in Talent Land was such a strategic move for Nu, how our culture aligns with the purpose of the event, and what we learned by sharing how we build impactful engineering with thousands of young talents.

From the first line of code to impact at scale

In just over 30 minutes, Oscar walked the audience through how we reached millions of customers in just a couple of years by building a technical operation that is robust, adaptable, and, above all, people-centered.

One of the key points Oscar shared was how our engineering is structured to operate with autonomy and efficiency. Our teams are decentralized, organized by business domains, and empowered to make their own technical decisions while also sharing responsibility for their outcomes. This model allows us to scale without sacrificing reliability or speed of delivery.

Another highlight of the talk was how we approach experimentation. Every new feature or product goes through rigorous, controlled testing with multiple variants so we can understand, through data, what truly works for our customers. This culture of continuous experimentation enables us to grow sustainably while staying responsive to local contexts.

Oscar also addressed how we handle challenges related to observability, monitoring, and resilience. Thanks to a microservices-based architecture and sharding strategies, we’re able to isolate faults, reduce risk, and ensure our systems stay up even under adverse conditions — all with a modern, cloud-native tech stack designed to evolve with time and user needs.

Technology in service of simplicity

One of the most powerful messages in Oscar’s presentation was the idea of simplicity as a strategic principle. As he emphasized, scaling systems doesn’t have to mean making them more complex. On the contrary: adopting engineering practices that promote modularity, clarity, and efficiency is key to maintaining quality and reliability in fast-growing environments.

This perspective came to life through real-world examples from our operations in Mexico, such as the challenges we faced when adapting to local regulatory requirements and how our technical teams acted quickly and collaboratively to overcome them without compromising the user experience.

A shared purpose: What connects us to Talent Land

Participating in Talent Land was also an opportunity to reaffirm what drives us as a company. The purpose behind the event — empowering young talent, promoting access to knowledge, and encouraging innovation with social impact — is deeply aligned with the values that guide everything we do at Nu.

We believe technology is a powerful tool for inclusion. By offering simple, transparent, and accessible financial products, we have the potential to transform the lives of millions of people who’ve historically been excluded from the traditional banking system. In Mexico, for instance, half of our customers gained access to credit for the first time through Nu, and many had no prior credit history.

This kind of transformation is only possible because we stay true to principles that also echoed throughout Talent Land’s talks and sessions:

Autonomy with accountability, so engineers can build solutions freely and with a sense of impact.

Collaboration across diverse teams, because we believe multidisciplinary work leads to smarter and more inclusive solutions.

A constant challenge to the status quo, striving to create what is fundamentally different — not just incrementally better.

In the end, being at Talent Land wasn’t just about sharing our tech stack. It was about showing how we work, how we grow, and how we create meaningful impact — in a way that invites the next generation of talent to build with us.

It’s still Day One

We wrapped up our participation with an open invitation for more people to join our team in Mexico. Because even after millions of customers and thousands of Nu employees, we still believe: it’s Day One. There’s still so much to learn, so much to build, and so many important challenges ahead.

And that’s exactly why events like Talent Land matter. They remind us why we’re here — and connect us with others who want to build a future that’s simpler, fairer, and more accessible. A purple future!
